Planned power cuts across Shumen city and villages today
Energo-Pro scheduled power cuts across multiple areas of Shumen city and surrounding villages today for maintenance and safety work. The city outages run 08:00 to 17:00 and affect the military base on the Varna road, the asphalt plant, part of KAT (the traffic police), and the livestock institute opposite KAT. Several villages also face cuts, including Lozevo, Belokopitovo, Gradishte, Cherëncha, Srednya and Novoselo. Interruptions in Novi Pazar, Pristoe, Ivanski, Drumevo, Mogila, Izgrev and Kaspichan are also planned, with some lasting until 17:00 and others shorter. The longest cut affects Mogila, where multiple streets lose supply from 08:30 to 17:00. Novi Pazar faces brief disruptions of around 30 minutes between 09:00 and 16:00.

Sunny morning, afternoon showers for Shumen
Shumen will see mostly sunny weather before midday, with clouds developing in the afternoon and brief showers likely across western and central Bulgaria, accompanied by thunder. Light southerly winds. Maximum temperature around 22°C in Shumen, 19–24°C nationally. The Black Sea coast stays dry with temperatures of 18–20°C and sea temperature 13–17°C. Mountain areas will also see afternoon showers, with temperatures around 14°C at 1,200m and 6°C at 2,000m.

Shumen fountain restoration wins funding under 'Drop by Drop' programme
Shumen municipality won approval for a project worth over €9,000 under Bcause Foundation's 'Drop by Drop' programme to restore a public fountain at Popov Chiflik, on the road to Novoselo. The fountain, fed by an independent spring and not connected to the main water network, will be cleaned, have pipes replaced, and the surrounding area landscaped with waste bins and an information board. Scout Club 'Madarski Konnik' and volunteers will assist with clearing and beautification. The application was submitted in March as part of the municipality's 'New Life for Old Fountains' initiative, which has already completed five similar restorations across the region. The programme received 82 applications nationwide, of which 22 were approved for funding.

Shumen deputy governor Fikret Ibryam dismissed
Fikret Ibryam, deputy regional governor of Shumen, was dismissed from his post by order of Prime Minister Rumen Radev, effective 14 May. Ibryam had been appointed to the role on 1 April 2026 by caretaker prime minister Andrey Gyurov. No reason was given for the dismissal.

Winners of 'Madara Horseman' art competition to be awarded tomorrow
The 18th edition of the National 'Madara Horseman' competition, organised by the Ministry of Education, Shumen municipality and the Anastas Stoyanov cultural centre, drew 202 entries from young people across Bulgaria in literature, visual arts, digital art and applied arts. After judging across three age groups, the panel awarded 94 prizes: first, second and third places plus commendations. The official awards ceremony will take place 16 May at 11:00 at the Military Club (DNA) in Shumen. A full list of participants is available on the cultural centre's official website.
