Cocaine driver detained, domestic violence arrests, and bikers rally against insurance hikes

Police in the Shumen region detained a cocaine-positive driver following a crash in Veliki Preslav, arrested three people for domestic violence offences, and local bikers are preparing a Friday protest over soaring motorcycle insurance costs. Separately, the city's identity documents office will operate shortened hours for pest control.

Driver detained after positive cocaine test following Veliki Preslav crash

A 33-year-old man from Veliki Preslav was detained after testing positive for cocaine following a road traffic collision. The incident occurred around 8:20 on 12 May at the junction of Kiril and Metodiy and Stefan Karadzha streets in the city.

Police attending the material-damage crash administered a drug test, which returned a positive result for cocaine. The driver, who was at the wheel of a Lynk & Co with Netherlands registration plates, provided a blood sample for chemical analysis and was detained for up to 24 hours in Veliki Preslav police custody.

The vehicle belongs to a 30-year-old woman. Pre-trial proceedings have been opened. Police noted similar recent detentions: a Shumen motorist arrested on 1 April for drug-driving, and another on 30 March.

Identity documents office closes early Friday for pest control

The Bulgarian Documents for Identity sector at Shumen regional police directorate will close at 16:00 on Friday, 15 May, instead of its usual hours. The office will accept applications and serve citizens until 4pm.

The reason for the reduced hours is disinfection and pest control of the premises. Police apologised for any inconvenience caused to the public.

Shumen bikers to protest high motorcycle insurance costs

Motorcycle clubs The Night Riders and Thirteens are staging a protest against high compulsory third-party liability insurance premiums. Riders will gather at 18:00 on Friday, 15 May on Rishki Prokhod boulevard and plan to block the Shumen–Karnobat road at the Ivanski village junction.

The Shumen rally is part of a nationwide bikers' protest. In a statement, Thirteens wrote: 'We insist on fair and realistic insurance terms for all motorcyclists in Bulgaria. Let us show we are united and will not accept unjust treatment in silence. Every bike on the protest is a voice against insane prices.'

Three arrested in separate domestic violence incidents

Police detained three people in the Shumen region for domestic violence offences over the past 24 hours.

A 29-year-old man from Novi Pazar strangled his 49-year-old mother following a family argument shortly before 14:30 on 12 May. Paramedics examined and released the woman; the son fled the home and remains at large. A 32-year-old man from Novi Pazar was arrested after making death threats during a Facebook Live broadcast at around 20:50 on 12 May towards a 32-year-old woman with whom he lives. He was detained for up to 24 hours.

A 32-year-old woman in the village of Tsani Ginchevo threatened to kill her 50-year-old mother at around 23:30 on 11 May. She was detained for up to 24 hours at Kaolinovo police station. Pre-trial proceedings have been opened in all three cases.
