Shumen 61 Stunned by Spartak Varna in Semi-Final Opener

Shumen 61’s quest for the handball championship hit an unexpected speed bump on Saturday as Spartak Varna claimed a dramatic 25-24 victory in the first match of their semi-final series.

Despite finishing the regular season at the top of the table, Shumen 61 found themselves on the wrong side of a one-goal thriller. In a match moved to Kubrat because Arena Shumen was being prepared for tomorrow’s parliamentary elections, the "home" advantage didn't quite materialise as the league leaders fell to their fourth-placed rivals.

A Game of Two Halves

Spartak Varna arrived with an point to prove, having lost to Shumen just two weeks ago in the Bulgarian Cup. They looked the sharper side from the first whistle, controlling the tempo to go into the break with a 14-11 lead.

The second half saw a spirited Shumen fightback. Egged on by the travelling support, the home side clawed their way back into the contest. By the 48th minute, a clinical run of three unanswered goals put Shumen 20-19 ahead, and for a moment, it looked like the favourites had finally weathered the storm.

However, Spartak refused to fold. They produced a clinical final ten minutes, reclaiming the lead and moving 24-21 clear by the 56th minute. Shumen managed a late rally to bring it back to a single goal, but time ran out before they could find an equaliser.

Why the Upset Matters

While Shumen 61 remain many people’s tip for the title, this result flips the script of the series.

The Ranking: Shumen finished 1st; Spartak finished 4th.

The Stakes: In a best-of-three series, Shumen are now under immense pressure. They must win away in Varna on 25 April to keep their season alive.

The Venue Factor: Playing away from the familiar surroundings of Arena Shumen clearly played a role, but the team will need to find their rhythm quickly regardless of the hall.

Elsewhere: Champions Cruising

In the day's other semi-final, there was far less drama. The defending champions, Lokomotiv Gorna Oryahovitsa, looked every bit the title contenders as they brushed aside Fregata 32-24 at Arena Byala.

Lokomotiv led 19-16 at half-time and never looked back, stretching their lead to eight goals by the final whistle. While one semi-final is now a high-stakes scrap, the other looks like a controlled march toward the final for the holders.

A Local Fixture with a Following

For those in Shumen’s international community who haven't yet caught a match, handball is a big deal here. Clubs like Shumen 61 and Spartak Varna aren't just sports teams; they are local institutions with a passionate following.

The next match is do-or-die for our boys. If Shumen can take the win in Varna next weekend, the series will return for a decider on 29 April. Fingers crossed they can find that regular-season form when they need it most.

Match Result: Shumen 61 (24) – (25) Spartak Varna
