Hemus Motorway resurfacing to begin on 11 May
The Road Infrastructure Agency is planning preventive repairs to 13 kilometres of the Hemus Motorway in Shumen province. The work will cover the Sofia-bound carriageway between the Kaspichan junction and the intersection with the I-2 Shumen–Varna road (km 350 to 363). All traffic will be diverted two-way onto the Varna-bound carriageway during the work.
The project includes complete resurfacing, improved drainage, new road signs, barrier systems and road markings. The section was last repaired in 2013 and has received only routine maintenance since. The contract has been awarded to Patperfect-T under the agency's concession for the Hemus Motorway in Shumen, Targovishte and Varna provinces. Work is expected to finish by 31 July.
A similar repair of the Varna-bound carriageway is planned, with the start date to be confirmed based on summer traffic volumes.

Five men arrested over identity-theft loan fraud
Five men from Burgas have been arrested following an investigation by Shumen's Economic Crime Unit into an alleged identity-fraud scheme. Police say the men used stolen personal data to take out multiple microloans of up to €300 from quick-credit firms.
The investigation began in 2025 after complaints were filed at Shumen police stations by people who discovered loans had been taken out in their names without their knowledge. Searches in Burgas yesterday uncovered mobile phones, SIM cards, debit cards and electronic storage devices.
The five suspects, aged 51, 46, 40, 32 and 28, have been detained for up to 24 hours and transferred to Shumen. Police say the two younger men appear to be the scheme's organisers. More than 20 fraud cases investigated by Shumen police are linked to the group, and officers are now examining whether the men are connected to similar activity elsewhere in Bulgaria.
