Bulgaria's National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology has published its June forecast, and British expats planning outdoor weekends or a midsummer trip should note two distinct phases: unsettled and stormy early on, then hotter and more stable as the month progresses.
Average monthly temperatures will sit between 20°C and 22°C across most of the country, climbing to 23°C in the Struma Valley. The warmest days, according to the NIMH forecast as reported by Novinite.com, could reach between 32°C and 37°C, well above seasonal norms. The mountains will stay cooler, averaging 4°C to 12°C depending on altitude.
Early June: Afternoon Storms and Hail
The first fortnight brings dynamic weather. Temperatures will remain near or above average, but cumulus and storm clouds will develop most afternoons, producing short-lived showers, thunderstorms, and occasional hail. Mornings will be sunnier before cloud cover builds.
Maximum daytime temperatures during this period are forecast between 28°C and 33°C. Anyone who's planned a mehana lunch in the countryside or a day on the coast knows how quickly those afternoon clouds can roll in. Pack a waterproof and keep an eye on the sky if you're spending the day outdoors.
Second Half: Hotter and More Settled
From mid-June onward, the weather is expected to stabilise. Widespread rainfall becomes less likely, though isolated showers may still occur in some areas. Temperatures will continue climbing and, in many regions, will stay above long-term climate averages.
The summer solstice arrives on 21 June at 11:24 a.m., marking the longest day of the year and the official start of astronomical summer.
Rainfall Near Normal, Regional Variation
Monthly precipitation totals are forecast close to normal. Plains areas should expect 50 to 70 litres per square metre. Along the Black Sea coast and in the Struma Valley, totals will likely be lower, between 30 and 50 litres per square metre. Mountainous regions may receive 70 to 130 litres per square metre.
The lowest overnight temperatures during June are expected between 8°C and 13°C.
What This Means for British Expats
Brits in Bulgaria should prepare for heatwave conditions, especially during the second half of the month. Stay hydrated throughout the day, avoid strenuous outdoor activity during peak afternoon heat (especially between 12 p.m. and 4 p.m.), and keep vulnerable family members cool and monitored. Bulgarian pharmacies stock oral rehydration salts if needed.
If you have elderly relatives or neighbours, check in on them during the hottest days. Heat exhaustion symptoms include dizziness, nausea, heavy sweating, and confusion. Move anyone affected to a cool place, give them water, and seek medical help if symptoms persist.
Those travelling between Bulgaria and the UK should note the contrast: Bulgaria's June will be significantly warmer and sunnier than the typical British summer, with daytime highs in the mid-30s rather than the low 20s. It's jacket weather in Manchester, sunscreen weather in Shumen.
