Sofia police detained at least 36 people on 15 June 2026 in a coordinated operation against the Kalashniks criminal group, sealing off parts of the Botunets neighbourhood with checkpoints and conducting raids on multiple addresses. If you drove through Botunets this weekend, the police presence was hard to miss.
Special police units and gendarmerie forces set up checkpoints and carried out searches targeting individuals linked to extortion, racketeering, and pimping, according to the Interior Ministry.
Evidence Seized
Chief Commissioner Lyubomir Nikolov, acting head secretary of the Interior Ministry, confirmed that officers found weapons and lists of women's names likely connected to prostitution exploitation during the searches. "In some of the places we find weapons that will be subject to analysis. In others we find lists of names of girls who are most likely being exploited for prostitution for specific individuals from the detained group," he stated.
Many of those detained have prior criminal records or previous encounters with law enforcement. Officials noted that some are related to one another, and several had been arrested in earlier operations targeting similar networks.
Follow-Up Charges Expected
Nikolov said further charges are being prepared. "Over 10 persons were detained in the previous operation. Some of these individuals will be detained again today and their criminal activity will be proven," he said.
The main accusations being prepared include extortion, racketeering, and pimping. Authorities described the operation as part of a broader national effort to dismantle organised criminal structures operating in Sofia and beyond.
Interior Minister's Warning
Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev stated publicly that there are "no untouchables" and warned that investigations will continue into financial flows and alleged illicit profits linked to organised crime.
Nikolov added: "We are aware that not only in Sofia, but also in other parts of the country there are such groups engaged in various criminal activities. The Ministry of Interior will act firmly and uncompromisingly, and their time is over."
Possible Link to Fatal Street Racing Crash
Prosecutors are examining possible links between the Kalashniks group and suspects in a recent fatal street racing incident on Chelopeshko Shose in Sofia, which killed four people. Authorities stress these claims remain unproven and under investigation. No connection has been confirmed.
Law enforcement agencies continue to analyse seized documents, digital evidence, and surveillance footage as they work to establish the full scope of the group's activities and any connections to other ongoing criminal cases in the capital.
What This Means for British Expats
British expats in Sofia should be aware of heightened police activity in the Botunets area, southwest of the city centre. While not a typical expat district, it's accessible if you're driving out towards Simeonovsko or the Ring Road.
The Interior Ministry's statement that further operations are likely suggests police activity across Sofia will remain elevated in the coming weeks. Standard crime awareness applies: stay informed about which neighbourhoods are seeing enforcement operations and avoid unnecessary travel through affected areas during active police actions.
If you're in or around Botunets and notice increased police presence or checkpoints, allow extra time for travel. There is no specific threat to British nationals, but awareness of ongoing law enforcement operations is sensible.
