Last witness to Preslav gold find speaks on Night of the Museums

Stancho Valev, 83, the last living witness to the discovery of the Preslav gold treasure, recounted the story at Veliki Preslav's archaeological museum during Night of the Museums. Valev was brigade leader of a team planting vines near the old capital on 11 April 1976 when labourers unearthed gold necklaces, earrings and a ring. He collected the finds in a cloth and took them to the town hall. After bureaucratic delay, a seven-member commission accepted the treasure, which archaeologist Totyu Totev later studied in a monograph. Only one member of the brigade, Mariyka Vicheva, received formal recognition: she was named an honorary citizen and awarded a second state pension. Valev's wife Krastinka remains the only Preslav resident to have worn the royal necklace around her neck, though no photograph exists. The family now spans two daughters, four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, and the story of the gold is a regular topic at gatherings.
