Permanent detention upheld for man who deliberately hit neighbour

Varna Appellate Court has upheld the detention of a 26-year-old man charged with intentionally driving his car into a neighbour in a village in Shumen oblast on 26 May. After a brawl between two groups of villagers, O. Mustafa got into his car, accelerated sharply and struck a 53-year-old man, who remains in hospital.

The prosecutor presented medical evidence showing the injuries are more serious than initially described and constitute grievous bodily harm. The defence argued there is no proof the act was deliberate and the accused has no prior convictions. The court noted the offence carries four to twelve years' imprisonment and confirmed the permanent remand order. The ruling cannot be appealed.
